Admission to this Master's Programme is granted to persons who have completed at least the equivalent of a Bachelor's or Diploma degree, and can demonstrate their research skills, their basic knowledge of the natural and/or social sciences, and a general insight in the subject of sustainable development and intervention strategies.

A suitable preparation for natural science tracks might include courses in physics, geology, technical sciences, biology, geography, earth sciences, or chemistry. For the social science tracks, the prospective student might have had courses in human geography, planning, sociology, policy sciences, law, management, or economics.

Languages


Because the whole programme is in English, the Selection Committee requires proof of the applicant’s proficiency in English. The applicant must submit a recent (not older than two years at the time of admission) one of the following certificates 

  • IELTS (academic module, minimum required score of 6.5 and not less than 6.0 in the writing section)
  • TOEFL (minimum required score 93, internet-based)
  • Cambridge EFL (English as a Foreign Language) presenting one of the following certificates: Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (minimum 180 points; Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (minimum score C1).

English-native-speaking applicants and those who successfully completed an English-taught bachelor programme do not have to take a test.

Note: it is possible to hand in the language certificate after the application deadline. Please upload the confirmation of application for the English test and indicate the exam resp. result date in the application. The certificate should be available during the selection committee meeting which takes place mid April!

Application to Utrecht University as entrance university

Students that choose Utrecht University as their home university, will also have to fulfill the admission criteria of Utrecht University, programme Sustainable Development.

Applicants to the Joint Master’s programme in Sustainable Development do not need to send in all the documents again to Utrecht University. Additional tests may be set as a condition to acceptance, e.g. in basic mathematics, natural processes or sustainability issues. Please note that students starting at Utrecht University are enrolled in one of three tracks: Energy & Materials, Environmental Change & Ecosystems or Earth System Governance, depending on their background. Courses in the 1st semester are connected to these tracks.

Application to University of Graz as entrance university

Important  NOTE:

If you apply for University of Graz as entrance university, you need to hand in the following certificates and minimum scores at the time of admission (2nd step after succesfull selection by the consortium):

  • TOEFL internet based: 95
  • IELTS: 7
  • Cambridge Certificates: (CAE grade 7/180 points; CPE level C1; CEF grade A)
  • 8 school years at an englisch-speaking School
  • 4 years English in an Austrian secondary school and final examination (Reifeprüfung) in English
  • completion of a study programme fully taught in English
