(1) Basic Module

All students of the Joint International Master in Sustainable Development have to follow the introductory module ‘Basics in Sustainable Development’ at their chosen entrance university.

By attending the basic module, students will

  • Obtain a comprehensive overview of the concept of sustainable development, ranging from local to global processes and including the history of the concept, as well as various ways of operationalization
  • Recognize key issues in sustainable development and make an integral and critical assessment of available options
  • Acquire knowledge of and skills in policy analysis and policy evaluation
  • Look at real-world problems from multiple perspectives and understand that achieving sustainability needs contributions from different worldviews
  • Understand Sustainable Development indicators and the methods most frequently used to measure them
  • Gain basic knowledge in different relevant scientific disciplines and understand their contributions to the field of sustainable development, and acquire the ability to integrate these.

(2) Specialisation Tracks (Mobility)

During the specialization track at the mobility university (2nd semester), you will deepen your knowledge in a chosen discipline. The subsequent ‘Integration Module’ will connect the different scientific approaches and prepare for the master’s thesis.

The programme consists of different tracks, allowing you to specialize in natural or social sciences (or a mix of both), depending on your undergraduate education.

Check out track descriptions HERE.

(3) Integration Module

The integration module in the third semester connects the different scientific approaches, engages the students in inter- and transdisciplinary case studies on sustainable development, and, through its strong research orientation, prepares them for the master thesis in the fourth semester.
