This year’s theme, “Encounters and Interactions in Language, Literature and Culture”, invites reflection on the relational dimensions of our disciplines — the ways in which meaning is produced through contact, translation and exchange across regions, media and disciplinary boundaries.

Students and recent graduates of the Joint Programme as well as students in literature, linguistics and cultural studies are welcome to contribute to the conference with either a paper (20 minutes) or a poster (DIN A0) presentation that addresses the 2026 conference theme “Encounters and Interactions in Language, Literature and Culture”. Deadline extended to 6 February 2026.

The students took the opportunity to meet their fellow students and share their experiences from the previous mobility semester abroad.

We wish everyone peaceful and happy holidays!

Around 50 international students began their Joint Master’s Programme at the University of Graz last month. To offer them a platform for a friendly welcome and initial networking, the Office of International Relations organised an event to which the new student’s intake, mobility students and fellow students enrolled in these Joint Master’s Programmes were invited. 

A warm official welcome by our Vice-Rector for Internationalisation and Equal Opportunities, Prof. Mireille van Poppel, kicked off an interactive event whose relaxed atmosphere offered our new student’s intake an invaluable opportunity to establish contacts with their fellow students, academic coordinators and representatives of important units at the University of Graz at this early stage.

Afterwards, students commented on how informative and welcoming the event was, and how much they appreciated being able to ask questions in such a relaxed and informal setting. We are also certain that this afternoon not only laid the foundation for an important chapter in their academic lives, but also forged lifelong friendships.

A warm welcome to the Joint International Master in Sustainable Development and to the University of Graz.

Students will have the opportunity to meet fellow students and academic coordinators from their Master's Programme and learn about the services offered by the Welcome Center and Treffpunkt Sprachen at the University of Graz.

The Joint Programme Team of the Office of International Relations will also provide useful information on the mandatory mobility and the unversity at the beginning of this interactive event.

Technological innovations present opportunities for achieving peace and sustainability. These technologies can facilitate cultural exchange, distribution of goods, and risk monitoring, among other uses. On the other hand, ill-intentioned use of these technologies could pose risks to international peace and security and exacerbate existing inequalities that could hinder the progress of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The United Nations Secretary-General has called for digital cooperation especially in an era when multilateralism is being confronted by armed conflicts, climate change, and heightened inequalities, among other global challenges. 

With this backdrop, the NERPS 2026 Conference highlights the role of technologies in strengthening multilateralism on peace and sustainability. It offers a platform for students, researchers, and practitioners to exchange ideas, present their work, and forge partnerships for transdisciplinary research and collaborative action toward peaceful and sustainable futures. The conference will feature research presentations, expert roundtables, innovative workshops, and an optional excursion.

The deadline for submitting abstracts is 15 November 2025.

The conference was held in continuation of the transdisciplinary Online Lecture Series of the Joint Programme “Environment(s): Literary, Cultural and Linguistic Perspectives”. Students and recent graduates of the Joint Programme were invited to contribute to the conference with either a paper or a poster presentation on the topic of “Environment(s)” with a literary, cultural, linguistic or transdisciplinary focus. 

The deliberately open and multidimensional concept of “Environment(s)” invited discussions that engage with the natural, social, cultural, and disciplinary landscapes that characterise our lives. The consortium sought contributions that addressed environmental challenges in the natural world, such as climate change, sustainability and ecological crisis, as well as the social and cultural environments that influence human relationships, identities and practices. Students and alumni were also invited to reflect on the environments of academia itself—interdisciplinary methodologies, intellectual ecosystems and the evolving spaces of knowledge production.

The aim of the conference was to create a dynamic platform for perspectives from the social sciences, economics and other disciplines to converge with literary, cultural and linguistic studies.

About 60 to 80 students participated in the online lecture series, which consisted of four online lectures given by renowned academics from the partner universities and culminated in this student conference.
